(cemetery). This cloister doorway, one of two, is crowned by a gracious Gothic tabernacle which contains the Virgin Mary with Child surrounded by four saints. The Camposanto (holy field) is a walled cemetery which many claim is the most beautiful cemetery in the world. (It became the burial ground for Pisa's upper class.) Construction on the huge, oblong Gothic cloister, which was erected over an earlier burial ground, began in 1278 & was completed in 1464. The outer wall is composed of 43 blind arches, & the inner court is surrounded by elaborate round arches. Most of the tombs are under the arcades, although a few are on the central lawn. The walls were once covered in frescoes but a WWII bombing raid in 1944 set the roof on fire & covered them in molten lead & all but destroyed them. Apparently, they have been restored to their original state? Photos & more info here: http://www.sacred-destinations.com/italy/pisa-camposanto.htm
