While on vacation in South Carolina my wife & I spent some time visiting Charleston, the beautiful coastal city established in 1670 that has figured substantially in several important moments in the life of America, not the least of which was the beginning of the Civil War on April 12, 1861, when Confederate troops opened fire on Federal forces holding Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The pictures here are from around city generally and cover historic homes and places throughout Charleston.

The pictures all the way up until the photographs of Joseph Manigault House were taken on July 18, when my wife and I landed at the Charleston airport and explored the city a little before continuing on to our vacation villa at Kiawah Island. The remainder of the pictures are from July 23, when my wife & I toured Ft. Sumter, shopped at the Market, and spent a few hours walking around the streets of the city, gaping at the exceptional architecture. Charleston is a remarkable city which has done a magnificent job preserving and maintaining historic homes. Walking through the streets you feel, were it not for the traffic from SUVs, like this was 1808 instead of 2008. I hope these pictures do justice to the magnificence of the City of Charleston.

These are the second of a series of pictures that I intend to publish on Worldisround under the title name of “The Lowcountry”, which is what the coastal area of South Carolina is commonly called. The first set was from The Battery. Stay tuned for Ft. Sumter and Kiawah Island.
