San Marco campanile (bell tower)
Sightseeing in Venice picture - located just outside the basilica & next to St Mark's Library (on the left), is a reconstruction of the one that collapsed in 1902. After years of rheumatism in the damp Venetian climate, the original bell tower collapsed & tumbled into the piazza one morning in 1902, but it was soon rebuilt. It's now safe to go to the top via an elevator, for a fee of course.
