Because of overuse, about 2/3 of the site is now closed to the public, & there is also a moratorium on further excavations. There are some who feel that Pompeii’s 2nd tragedy was its rediscovery, & that it should have been left to slumber for another century or two, when it might have been better excavated & maintained.
