Because of updated safety regulations, the theater was closed in 1974 for complete renovations. But it was 23 years before the theater re-opened again 4 days before its centenary in 1997. Again, cost over-runs, corruption, & political in-fighting added to the delay. During the restoration, other smaller theaters in the city were used. Charges of corruption, political meddling, budget deficits & heavy debts continue to plagued the theater. (Remember, this is Sicily, home of the Mafia.)
