perched on a hill, viewed from our hotel. Sicily has many medieval castles. This is one of them. Built between 1075 & 1090, it is located in the town of Carini about 20 kms from Palermo by road. The history of the castle includes a scandalous double murder which occurred on the 4th of December 1563, when Laura Lanza, the Countess of Carini, & her lover Ludovico Vernagallo were slain by her father, Don Cesare Lanza, to protect the honor of the family name. The story has assumed the status of legend & has become a favorite subject of poets & ballad-singers.
