This album shows the scenery and attractions at the Mamukala Wetlands, in the South Alligator region of the Kakadu National Park, 350 km east of Darwin.

It is reached off the Arnhem Highway, 31 km from the Bowali Visitor Centre.

I visited these scenic Wetlands on November 13, 2008, in the Gunumeng (pre-monsoon) season, as part of a two-day coach tour of the Kakadu National Park.

A boardwalk leads from the car park to the birdhide and observation platform, where there is a beautiful large colored mural illustrating the seasonal changes which occur throughout the year.

The Bininj/Mungguy People recognize six different seasons, as well as subtle variations which signpost the transition from one season to another.

This knowledge of nature is fundamental to the culture of Kakadu and its people. Bininj/Mungguy have lived with the changing lansdcape for tens of thousands of years, adapting and using the land for food, shelter, and general well-being.
