Other rooms which we didn’t see included a gym with one of the best contemporary depictions in the world of Circus Maximus & the horse races that were held there. There was a cold bath room with access to a plunge pool. The small anointment room was where bathers would be anointed with perfumed oils after hot baths. The internal latrine was a semicircular room with marble benches along the walls, over a channel with a continuous flow of water, the first “flush toilets.” A shallow water channel in front of the benches had sponges attached to sticks for patrons to wipe themselves & share (yuk.......).
