This courtyard & the adjacent 'triclinium' (dining room) are a separate part of the villa. These 2 areas, the showpieces of the villa designed to show off the wealth & power of the owner, were likely used for banquets & other social events. This surviving portion of the floor mosaic has a pattern of whirling acanthus scrolls circling the heads of animals & birds.
