I'm not sure what exact species of heron this is. I caught it while I was on a walking trail and, because of my telephoto lens (35mm equivalent of 400mm) I'm not nearly as close to it as it appears. It's important not to get closer than the bird (or any animal) is comfortable with because, if you disrupt their feeding and put them to flight, it burns energy reserves they badly need to make it through the winter and make the long spring migration to their mating grounds.
