I wondered while I was there if they are called cranes because of this pose or if "craning ones neck" was coined as a result of what they do. I still don't know. In any event, this is a typical posture just before they begin flying. Often, they will take this pose, relax it and look around, then take the pose again and takeoff. Sometimes the relaxing and looking occurs several times before they finally fly.
