Locking through toward the Volga River
Russia picture - One of the amazing facts about the Moscow-Volga Canal is that, though it is a downhill trip, the water in the canal nevertheless has its origin in the Volga. Since the Moskva River cannot supply the water, the necessary water has to be pumped up. In other words, when the water level in a lock is lowered, it is not just allowed to just drain out of the lock to flow down the canal, but it is pumped up into the higher level of the canal, thus replenishing the canal's general water level.
