St Lucy (283-304) was a virgin martyr who was born & died in Syracuse Sicily. Her feast is celebrated by Latins & Greeks on 13 December. She was born to a Roman father & Greek mother. After her father died, her mother committed her to an arranged marriage, but like so many early martyrs, Lucy had consecrated her virginity to God. Her rejected betrothed denounced her to the Governor of Sicily, who initially condemned her to prostitution, however, because they were not able to drag her away, she was ordered killed (stabbed).
