Current EU/Italian license plates.
Sightseeing in The "Boot" picture - The new alpha-numeric system that was introduced in 1994 omitted any reference to the province of origin. (This proved unpopular & was re-introduced as an option in 1999.) The plates were redesigned in 1999 to meet EU standards, with blue bands added on each end. The EU band with EU flag motif (12 yellow stars) was added on the left side, with the country code beneath it (in this case I for Italy). The blue band on the right side shows the registration year inside a yellow circle. The optional two-letter provincial code appears on the right band. Most vehicles (95%) show the code, but I see this one doesnt. The word "ROMA" replaces the two-digit provincial code for the city of Rome. (Did you know that Rome is the only city in the world where vehicle registration plates show the full name of the city?)
