Stunning main altar
Sightseeing in The Amalfi Coast picture - with the famous 13th century Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna. Note also the charming pulpit on the right. According to local legend, the Black Madonna icon had been stolen & was being transported by pirates across the Mediterranean, when a terrible storm occurred in the waters opposite Positano. When the frightened sailors heard a voice saying "Posa, posa!" ("Put it down! Put it down!"), the precious icon was unloaded & carried to the fishing village, & then the storm abated. Apparently, the town's name Positano (which means "put it there" in Latin), derives from this legend.
