Sightseeing in The Amalfi Coast picture - At the foot of the cliff on the upper right is one of the 3 guard towers built in 1332 to defend the city from Turkish pirate raids. Apparently, two more guard towers on the hillside have been converted into residences. During the times of the Amalfi Republic, its borders were protected with castles & fortifications, & those remains can still to be seen near the town centers half-way between the sea & the mountain ridges. The series of watchtowers along the coast are a reminder of the danger posed by Turkish pirates.
