Weymouth lies on the south coast of England in the county of Dorset. It has a long seafaring history, including and not limited to being the port where the black plague was brought ashore in 1348, the port from which in 1583 Captain Richard Clark departed from Weymouth to join Sir Humphrey Gilbert in his discovery of Newfoundland, the port from where in the 1620's ships sailed to America, to New England. King George 111 came to Weymouth to bathe in 1789. In 1994 Weymouth hosted the start of the Tall Ships Race for the third time, the only port ever to have done so, and it is to be the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games with Weymouth and Portland hosting the sailing events.
