Le Puy-en-Velay, commonly known among Frenchs as Le Puy, is emplaced near the centre of the range, between the cities of St Etienne and Clermont-Ferrand. It was an ancient Celtic emplacement that was used by Roman legions to place a military camp (Anicium), which originated the foundation of the city named Podium Aniciensis.
