Smoke erupting from a fissure on Kilauea volcano. The current eruption began in 1983. Volcanic smog - or vog -is caused by these eruptions, and it affects many areas of these islands. When the winds come out of the east, vog is blown over to the western side of the Big Island, and even over to Oahu & Honolulu, many miles away.
