Straight ahead is the mainland town of Brunswick, where 99 Liberty Ships (freighters) were built during WWII. Also from 1943 – 1958, the US Navy’s main patrol blimps operated from the air station there, and escorted nearly 100,000 ships along the coast without a single loss to enemy submarines. To the left is the Sidney Lanier bridge, named after the poet who wrote about the Marshes of Glynn.
