I went to Peru in August of last year. I met some friends who live there and I had a great time. The weather was cooler at that time of year than the hot/humid climate of SC in August. Lima is the City of the Kings. In many ways it is similar to cities in Europe. It has large squares and older buildings. They have a changing of the guards daily at the Presidential palace.
