The quadrangular cloister that surrounds the stupa has fine examples of classic Lao & Khmer sculptures. The stupa complex, situated on a hill 5 kms north of Vientiane, was originally built in 1566 on the ruins of an earlier 13th century Khmer temple. It was destroyed during the 1828 Siamese invasion & later reconstructed by the French in 1930.
