<noembed><nolayer><div style="position:absolute; left:0; top:-100; display:none;"> That Dam (Black Stupa)<br> Sightseeing in Vientiane picture - This ancient landmark, which sits in a roundabout in front of the US Embassy, is one of the oldest structures in Vientiane. Built in the 15th century or even earlier, it was one of the few structures that survived the invasion by the Thais in 1828. They destroyed &#38; burned much of the city when they retreated. The stupa&#146;s red bricks were blackened in the fire, hence the name. According to legend, it is the resting place of a seven-headed dragon that was supposed to protect the city from Siamese invasions. However, since it failed to do that, the stupa isn&#146;t worshiped much &#38; has been neglected. </div></nolayer></noembed>
