Hibiscus rosa sinenis or Bunga Raya in Malay or 大红花 in chinese, is the national flower of Malaysia. It was declared as Malaysia's national flower by the government on 28th July 1960, beating a few others nominations like ylang-ylang, jasmine, lotus, rose, magnolia and bunga tanjung (malay).

The species Hibiscus rosa-sinensis has a fiery red color which represents courage, life and growth of Malaysia. The five red petals represent the Rukun Negara ( Malay for National Principles ) which can be translated as BELIEF IN GOD; LOYALTY TO KING AND COUNTRY; THE SUPREMACY OF THE CONSTITUTION; THE RULE OF LAW ; COURTESY AND MORALITY.
