Early June in Yellowstone. There is still snow on the side of the road. That was a choice: either the throngs of summer tourists, or an early start. I opted for the early start, waiting for the mountain passes to open up before leaving California. Even so, I almost got stuck in a major snowstorm on the Donner Pass --a pretty nasty thing to navigate on two wheels. But I made it. By the time I got to Reno, I was told I'd been lucky; they had just closed the pass.
