Thessaloniki, Greece

While in Chalkidiki, Greece, we planned a trip to Thessaloniki. Prior to this I've done some research on the web, and I've saved some points of interests (POI).

Unfortunately, I forgot to recharge the battery of my GPS navigation device while we were heading North towards Thessaloniki. I realized that just a few miles before reaching our destination... So, after we reached Agia Sofia (St. Sophia Church), the GPS was dead. I was lucky to remember a few POIs, like The Arch of Galerius, Rotonda, St. Dimitrios Church, The White Tower...

After we visited Agia Sofia, we went back to the car (I must say that we found quite easily a parking place), and with the GPS powered again, we searched for the Arch of Galerius. We were able to spot the Rotonda, so we pull over the car, and we visited the above mentioned buildings. It was not necessary to go there by car, because they are quite close to Agia Sofia, and even other destinations like the Roman Agora, St. Demetrius Church, and even the White Tower.

The day was very hot at the time we went out of Rotonda, so we eat and have some refreshments. There are plenty of restaurants no matter where you are heading.

Roman Agora was in a process of restauration, and it seems that there will be a very nice place to visit that will give us a view of how a Roman city look two milleniums ago.

On the shore we were not able to visit the White Tower either because it was closed for restauration: there were some blue fences around it. Some outside photos were quite satisfactory! Near the White Tower we spoted the statue of Alexander the Great, and Basiliko Theater.

After a promenade along the shore, and driving with no target throughout the city, my daughter reminded me that we did not visited a single museum yet. Oh yes, she was right! I turned on the GPS again, and I searched for some museums nearby. Byzantine Museum (or Museum of Byzantine Culture) was the closest to our position. I was impressed to see a modern building hosting an old culture. Like the outside of the building, the interior is also modern. I thought that my daughter (8 years old in 2008) will hurry me, but she really liked the museum. I think that because the rooms were very well arranged, and she was attracted by various and interesting pieces exposed inside the museum. So, allow at least two hours in here! If the weather is too hot, don't worry! There is a very peaceful and cool bar right near the entrance of the building (inside of the building).

Well, that was our day in Thessaloniki!
