This smiling image, the enigmatic Mona Lisa of Southeast Asia, is recognizable as an image of compassion & equanimity. The face is also said to depict Jayavarman VII, the temple's builder & benefactor. The origin of the faced towers, a motif which did not survive Jayavarman VII, remains unknown.
