Sightseeing in Siem Reap/Angkor picture - The 54 gigantic divinities, that line each side of the causeway, are devas* on one side & asuras on the other, depicting a famous Hindu story - the myth of the Churning of the Ocean. *[These are two classes of gods - devas = deities (order), & asuras = demons (chaos).] The deities are pulling the serpent's head in one direction, while the demons are pulling the tail in the other direction, much like a modern-day tug of war game. As the myth goes, this caused the ocean to 'churn' thereby forming the earth & the cosmos anew.
