The area is home to many ethnic Vietnamese & numerous Cham communities who live in floating villages around the lake. The Cham originated from an area along the central coast of Vietnam called Champa, a wealthy maritime nation in frequent contact with China. Many have migrated to other parts of SE Asia, including Cambodia, where they are a socially important ethnic minority. They are mainly rice farmers but also grow other crops. Their cycle of subsistence also includes animal domestication, hunting & fishing.
