Following an article from local newspaper on Rafflesia, the more adventurous side of me just had to make a trip to see this amazing flower. This was especially so when I discovered we had some literally behind our own backyard. Ulu Geroh, an orang Semai settlement village was just minutes away from Gopeng town and was apparently quite accessible. Rented a 4 wheel drive, tricked my family on board the car and off we went ahunting for the big red. Take the NorthSouth highway turn out at Gopeng exit (i'm from the north) and turn right into Gopeng town. Go pass the police station on your right and turn right. Go straight until u come to a roundabout. Turn 3 oclock and go straight all the way. You will pass an underpass with the highway above you. you know you are on the right track if you see a chinese cemetary on your left. From here just go straight all the way. ( I mean all the way..) You have to follow the sungai Geroh on your left when you are near. Ask the friendly locals for Ulu Geroh and you won't miss it. Drive until you come a rickety wooden (inaccessible by car) bridge and park somewhere. Ask for Along.(local guide who will charge a nominal fee to guide you) I think he lives on the third hut from the bridge. he is somewhat a local celebrity having been interviewed by several local dailies.
