This hike is in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness, west of Grand Teton National Park. We started the hike by riding the chairlift at Grand Targhee Resort to the top of Fred's Mountain. Even though the resort is in western Wyoming the only way to get there is a 12 mile drive from Driggs, Idaho. The wilderness area was set aside for it's unique karst landscape. The Burren in Ireland is also karst. I call this "Hike to Mary's and One Hour Beyond". Mary's is the peak that we sometimes hike to and this time we went one hour longer. This peak use to be called Mary's Nipple, named by the husband of Mary Beard, early settlers in the area. It was common in the old days to name mountains with this name. Today this peak is just called Mary's. Wilderness areas in the United States prohibit bicycles and motorized vehicles, dogs and pack animals are allowed. This hike was done in August.
