Siem Reap division. The Cambodian People's Party, is the socialist party, the current ruling party of Cambodia. It was founded as the Kampuchean People's Revolutionary Party in May 1981 from pro-Vietnamese segments of the Communist Party of Kampuchea which had constituted itself as a separate party in early 1979. It was the sole legal party in the country at the time. The party was renamed in 1991 mainly to distinguish it from the reactionary Pol Pot party. The party has an outright majority in the National Assembly of Cambodia, but governs in coalition with the royalist Funcinpec party.
