In the Algarve you will notice that no chimney is the same. They are all lime washed but also have design features which differ. You will notice that some houses have two chimneys, one is the chimney that is actually used and the other is a symbol of the owners status and is more intricate. When building the chimney the owner was asked how long they wanted their chimney to last and the longer time meant a larger cost and higher status.
