WAT LANKA (1422) Sightseeing in Phnom Penh picture - Founded in 1422, Wat Langka is also one of Phnom Penhs five original wats (pagodas). First established as a sanctuary for the Holy Writings and a meeting place for Cambodian and Sri Lankan monks, the Wat was named in honour of these meetings. Wat Langka was used as a storehouse by the Khmer Rouge during their reign of terror so it escaped total destruction. Now fully renovated, this temple still plays an important role in Cambodian Buddhism. It is located close to the Independence Monument & is often used as a landmark by visitors.
