Obviously, the Nikon P80 is more than adequate at 30 yards. I have a Canon SX10, which is quite similar, and shots at 30 yards are easily captured. If I want to get a pic such as a head shot of a bear with a fish, I can crop and enlarge with Picasa. No need for tripods and long lenses.

I use a Nikon P80 that has a 18x optical lens. Nothing special. Some of the shots were with a Canon Rebel with a 200mm lens. I like the Nikon because I don't have to carry all of the lenses around in a back pack along with a tripod. The bears are only about 30 yards from the platform that you are on. The one disadvantage is that you can't put on a a polarizing lense or haze filter on the Nikon. You could use a 3x and get a good picture at this location. A lot of the photographers were trying to get the fish as soon as it enters the bear's mouth. They shoot a lot of shots per second on a tripod. They try to get only the bears head and the fish.

What kind of camera and lens did you use to get those great shots?

I had to book Brooks Lodge 1 1/2 years in advance. Brook's Lodge was crawling with photographers from all over the world with huge telephoto lenses trained on the falls waiting for the money shot of a fish jumping into the grizzlies mouth.

Great series of pictures!! Maybe the best ever on this site. Sure beats pics of my wife's flowers I used to put up.
