But the 19th Century prospectors had it worse. After reaching the top of the mountain trail, they entered British Columbia, Canada, and the Canadian government insisted that each Stampeder take enough provisions for an entire year. This saved countless lives by forcing them to have sufficient clothing and food to exist in the harsh wilderness. This photo and the next shows what a prospector would have had to carry on that trail.
