MEX-40 is the road that connects the city of Durango to Mazatlan on the Pacific Coast. It cuts through the western Sierra Madres at an altitude of around 8,000 feet above sea level. The road is officially called MEX-40 but it is known locally as "El Espinazo del Diablo" (The Devil's Spine) because of it's endless sharp curves and sheer cliffs.
