Lake Arenal is the largest lake of Costa Rica. It is located on the west side of Arenal volcano and close to the Monteverde cloud forests. The original natural lake was much smaller in size. But a dam was constructed in 1979 to increase the size of of the lake by 3 times its original size. It is now 33 sqaure miles in size and is used to generate hydroelectricity which is the major source of electricity for the entire country.
