Gooseberry Island in Westport, Massachusetts is part of the Horsenbeck Beach recreational area. The island was the summer paradise for wealthy families. The hurricane of 1938 destroyed all the homes on the island. When WWII began the US military constructed gun emplacements, the remnants of which still remain, to protect the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal, five miles to the east.
