Muscat is an ancient town. Its name comes from the Arabic word "masqat" which means "cliffs" and describes the local landscape quite acurately. Its civilization dates back some 5000 years. Today the metropolitan area of Mucat covers some 1500 square kilometres, and has a population of roughly 1.1 million people. In the 1st century CE it was an important trading port between the west and the east, today, judging from what was going on in the harbour of Muscat, it still is an important trader.
