To do so they had to displace an existing cemetery containing the remains of centuries of their deceased brethren. To create a sort of memorial, they built an adjoining chapel, using their bones. This is one of several &#147;bone chapels&#148; in Europe: it and the larger one in Evora are the two best known examples of this macabre form of memorial in Portugal. </div></nolayer></noembed>
