the Carmo church and square
Attractions & Amusements in Faro picture - This beautiful baroque church was built by Carmelite monks in 1816. To do so they had to displace an existing cemetery containing the remains of centuries of their deceased brethren. To create a sort of memorial, they built an adjoining chapel, using their bones. This is one of several bone chapels in Europe: it and the larger one in Evora are the two best known examples of this macabre form of memorial in Portugal.
