an astrolabe
Outdoor Sculpture in Ottawa picture - This is a drawing of what an astrolabe looked like. It was a predecessor of the sextant used by mariners for centuries. In 1613 Champlain lost his near Ottawa during a portage, probably somewhere around the present-day village of Cobden: it was discovered in 1867 by a child who sold it for $10. It eventually became the property of the New York Historical Society, from which it was purchased for the Canadian Museum of Civilization in 1989.
