When he planned and supervised the refurbishing of Fort Henry in the 1930s, Ronald Way conceived the idea of using young men as live animators to show and interpret life there as it was in 1867, the time of Confederation. As a result, the Fort Henry Guard (FHG) was formed in 1938, and the typical uniforms and instruments of the period were created, and genuine cannon, muzzle-loading rifles and the Snider-Enfield rifle of 1866 were gradually obtained.
