This photo journal, which is part of the Prague series, features picturesque Neruda Street, the historic street linking Charles Bridge to Prague Castle via Lesser Town (Mala Strana) on the west side of the river. Lesser Town, which boasts many embassies and palaces, clusters around the foothills of Prague Castle, across the river from the Old Town.

Neruda Street, aka (Royal Way or Kings Road) is named after the 19th century Czech writer and journalist Jan Neruda. This charming street is characterised by ancient burgher houses & palaces, most now transformed into quaint hotels, restaurants and small shops, & is a favorite setting for movies.

House numbering is a relatively recent innovation in Prague. In olden times, it was usual to distinguish buildings with house signs above the main door. Neruda Street offers many fine examples of this. For example, a house near the bottom of the street has an emblem of three small fiddles over the entrance because it was the home of violin makers. So in early times, the address would have been "at the three little fiddles". Another example is the house of the Two Suns which used to be Neruda's home.
