What had surprised me, was that crossing over to the Pacific, we had, apparently crossed areas the altitude of which was around 3000 meters. Being used to mountains which at those heights have glaciers and snowfields, even in the summer, these tropical mountains, however, certainly did not reveal just how high they really were.
I guess that such learning of new things, is the advantage of traveling.

Much of the rest of the area - - - - - - seemed to be able to support low shrubs or grasses only.
