This small town of about 3,500 on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River about fifty miles (80 km) east of Quebec City is the wood-carving capital of Canada, and perhaps of all North America. In fact, it was selected as “cultural capital of Canada” in 2005. It was founded as a parish in 1721, and as a municipality in 1857. In 1994 the town inaugurated their annual international symposium for wood sculptors.
