The medieval town of Axbridge lies on the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills. It lies approximately 18 miles southwest of the City of Bristol and 28 miles northeast of the County Town of Taunton. It was granted a Royal Charter in 1202, when King John sold most of the Royal Manor of Cheddar to the Bishop of Bath and Wells.
