I had been to Hawaii twice before, but only to Kauai. I love Kauai, but I had to try a different island this trip and Maui blew me away. It can be done fairly cheap as well. I stayed at a wonderful youth hostel in Wailuku called the Banana Bungalow (not connected at all to the chain). It/s not in the best neighborhood, but with a hot tub, hammocks, grill, kitchen and big living room it felt like home after a long day of driving around the island.
