The medieval village of 'Chaves', was not strongly protected in the border with Spain. It was necessary to strengthen it in order to prevent an attack from the enemy's artillery. 'D. Rodrigo de Castro', who was the military governor of the province of 'Tras-os-Montes', built this fort.
