The scarlet firethorn (Pyracantha coccinea) belongs to an Eurasian group of species coming mainly from China, though this particular one lives from Turkey to Italy. Like in the Holly tree, fructification is the main attractive of firethorns, and their fruits still feed many birds at the beginning of the winter season, when food is already scarce.
